Jesus College Medical and Veterinary Society

We the People of the Jesus College Medical & Veterinary Society, in order to form a more perfect society, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquillity, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the Jesus College Medical Society.

 

Article. I.

Section. 1.

All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the Jesus College Medical & Veterinary Society, which shall consist of a Committee and House of Mentors.

Section. 2.

The House of Mentors shall be composed of members chosen every year by the Committee of the Jesus College Medical & Veterinary Society

No person shall be a mentor who shall not have attained to the age of sixteen years, and been one year a member of the Jesus College .

When vacancies happen in the mentors from any Year, the Committee thereof shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies.

The House of Mentors shall choose their speaker and other officers; and shall not have the sole power of impeachment.

Section. 3.

The Committee of the Jesus College Medical & Veterinary Society shall be composed of a President, Vice President,Treasurer, Fundraising Officer and Social Secretary chosen by the members thereof for one year; and each committee member shall have one vote.

If vacancies happen by resignation, or otherwise, the committee thereof may make temporary appointments until the election of the legislature, which shall then fill such vacancies.

No person shall be a Committee member who shall not have attained to the age of eighteen years, and been one year a member of Jesus College .

The President of the Jesus College Medical & Veterinary Society shall be President of the Committee, but shall have only one vote, unless they be equally divided.

The Committee shall have the sole power to try all impeachments. When sitting for that purpose, they shall be on oath or affirmation. When the President of the Jesus College Medical & Veterinary Society is tried, the President of the Jesus College Student Union shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the concurrence of two thirds of the members present.

Judgment in cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honour, trust or profit: but the party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to indictment, trial, judgment and punishment, according to law.

Section. 4.

The Committee shall assemble at least once in every term.

Section. 5.

The Committee may determine the Rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behaviour, and, with the concurrence of two thirds, expel a member.

Section. 6.

No member of the Committee may hold more than one position within the committee.

Section. 7.

The committee or any member may not undertake actions that will cause the society to be in debt.

Section. 8.

Membership shall automatically be granted to all Medical and Veterinary students of Jesus College upon matriculation. All members of the Jesus College Students Union are entitled to membership and may apply through the Committee. Any other person may request membership through the committee.

 

Article. II.

Section. 1.

Elections for the executive positions of President, Vice President,Treasurer, Fundraising Officer and Social Secretary shall be as follows:

The committee shall hold elections for the posts of President, Vice President,Treasurer, Fundraising Officer and Social Secretary in the Easter term. No person except a member of Jesus College Medical & Veterinary Society may be eligible for the executive positions.

The committee shall announce the forthcoming election to the members. Elections shall be held no less than 10 days after the announcement. Applicants for positions must submit their manifestos to the committee by a date decided by the committee. The committee shall then publish the manifestos to the members and announce a date by which voting must conclude.

Voting will take place using the system of single transferable votes.

In case of the removal of a member of the committee from office, or of his death, resignation, or inability to discharge the powers and duties of the said office, the same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Committee may provide for the case of removal, death, resignation or inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what officer shall then act as President, and such officer shall act accordingly, until the disability be removed, or a President shall be elected.

Before he enter on the execution of his office, he shall take the following oath or affirmation:--"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the Jesus College Medical Society, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Medical Society."

Section. 2.

The President, Vice President,Treasurer, Fundraising Officer and Social Secretary of the medical society, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, rreason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanours.

 

Article III.

Section. 1.

The Committee, whenever two thirds shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this constitution, or, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this constitution.

 

Article. IV

All debts contracted and engagements entered into, before the adoption of this constitution, shall be as valid against Jesus College Medical Society under this.
